Year 10 German
German is the most widely spoken native language in Europe and is one of the official working languages of the European Union, where Germany's role is becoming increasingly important. The German economy ranks fourth in the world and is the home to numerous international corporations. At Craighead we believe that learning a language is a tangible way to love your neighbour.

Terms 1 and 2
Meine Freizeit (My Free Time)
We will learn how to describe how you spend your free time. What do you do after school and on the weekend? Are you sporty? Are you musical? Do you have a particular passion for something? We will learn the language needed to meet up with friends and arrange different activities, what to wear and when and where to meet.
Die Schule (School)
We will find out about the differences between school life in Germany and New Zealand, including school subjects, timetables and school uniform. Are there any special German school traditions?
Mein Zuhause (My Home Town)
We will discover how to describe the places that mean the most to us in terms of our town, our area, our house and our bedroom. We will compare the way we live to how people live in Germany.

Meine Routine (My Daily Routine)
Get ready to describe your daily life in more detail. What does your daily routine look like during the week and at the weekend?
Einkaufen und Essen (Shopping and Food)
We want to learn the language to be able to shop at a traditional German market or a shop in town and ask how much something costs. We will also be able to compare prices of food and clothes in Germany and New Zealand.
Wie komme ich am besten...? (What's the best way to get to...?)
Imagine you are in a German town or city. It would be very useful to be able to find your way around and be able to understand directions. We will learn the language needed to understand directions and then put this into practice by heading out and about on scooters in Timaru.
